FLIR: Forward Looking InfraRed – FLIR Cameras from InfraTec for Thermal Imaging

The term FLIR is an acronym for the abbreviation Forward Looking InfraRed. This designation has been established at the beginning of the early 60s of the last century while the development of thermal cameras was progressing. Sideward or downward looking 1-dimensional aircraft-mounted systems gradually had been replaced by forward looking scanner cameras which were not depending on the craft's motion for generating an image.

A state-of-the art FLIR camera is equipped with either cooled or uncooled 2-dimensional imaging sensors which capture infrared images in the wavelength range from (2 ... 14 µm). Their imaging capabilities have turned them into a valuable tool for any law enforcement or security application, but they are also used for industrial thermography and building inspection, too.

MicroScan – Quadruple the Image Format

Behind the function is a fast-rotating MicroScan wheel, which is integrated into the camera. It ensures that four different individual exposures are taken per wheel revolution, which are offset laterally by half a pixel each. These individual exposures are brought together in real time into a thermogram with quadruple image format. Each pixel in the image represents a genuine temperature measured value and not an interpolated image point. In this way, thermography achieves a new quality due to thermal images providing a spatial resolution up to 3.7 Megapixels.

High-speed Mode – Increase Frame Rates and Thermal Resolution

If you want to analyze the thermal behavior of objects and processes from a wide variety of perspectives, you can use the high-speed mode for maximum flexibility. This function allows the camera to be used in two different operating modes. The standard mode suits best for depicting the smallest geometrical details. This allows users to record images with the native number of pixel of the camera detector. Switching to high-speed mode opens up the option of more than triple the frame rate, while the field of view (FOV) remains identical. This enables for most accurate time monitoring of fast processes. At the same time, the thermal resolution increases by a factor of 2 in high-speed mode, which additionally improves the analysis of temperature differences.

HDR – Simultaneous Mapping of Wide Temperature Ranges

The High Dynamic Range (HDR) function of the Infrared ImageIR® camera series enables measurement scenarios with extremely different temperatures to be recorded continuously. When recording in HDR mode, multiple thermograms with different integration times and different filters are recorded quickly in succession and compiled into an overall image with a high dynamic range. The measuring range can span up to 1,500 K. Users obtain high-contrast images in a wide temperature range characterized by high measurement accuracy.

HighSense for thermographic camera series ImageIR®

HighSense – Always the Optimal Camera Setting

Thanks to HighSense, ImageIR® users have the option of setting up individual measuring ranges based on the factory calibration that best suit the respective task. The software also offers the possibility of storing a large number of such areas clearly arranged. Individually named and permanently stored, the operator can quickly access them. The same applies to changing, renaming and deleting profiles. HighSense is available for different camera models of the ImageIR® series. This function can optionally be added to systems already delivered.
